- NTA to Present Annual Report to Congress at Live ABA Teleconference – National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) Nina E. Olson will participate in a live teleconference on Feb. 18, hosted by the American Bar Association. The NTA will discuss the major findings and recommendations from the 2009 Annual Report to Congress (ARC), including the need for the IRS to improve taxpayer service, collection practices and tax preparer regulation. - NTA Releases 2009 Annual Report to Congress – National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) Nina E. Olson released her Annual Report to Congress, which calls attention to the need for the IRS to improve taxpayer service, collection practices and tax preparer regulation. The report identifies the IRS’s declining ability to provide taxpayer assistance by telephone as the most serious problem facing taxpayers, describing the IRS’s projected level of service for fiscal year 2010 as “unacceptable.”
- NTA Delivers FY 2010 Objectives Report – National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) Nina E. Olson delivered a report to Congress identifying the priority issues the Office of the Taxpayer Advocate will address in the coming fiscal year. An IRS news release and previous reports are also available. In particular, the FY 2010 report highlights key focus areas, including working with the IRS to:
- Improve taxpayer services
- Enhance IRS oversight of federal tax return preparers
- Increase the effectiveness of the offer in compromise program
- Improve the IRS’s ability to administer refundable tax credits effectively.
- NTA Releases New Video Tax Tips – NTA Nina Olson recorded a series of TAScast videos with consumer information on important tax issues. These include collection alternatives for financially struggling taxpayers and the tax treatment of cancellation of debt income, which affects many taxpayers who have lost their homes to foreclosure.
