- NTA Releases 2008 Annual Report to Congress – National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) Nina E. Olson released her annual report, which urges Congress to greatly simplify the tax code and recommends measures to reduce taxpayer burden. “It is imperative for the IRS to consider the circumstances of taxpayers facing economic hardship before initiating enforcement actions,” Olson wrote.

About the Taxpayer Advocate Service
Mission statement: As an independent organization within the IRS, we help taxpayers resolve problems with the IRS and recommend changes that will prevent the problems.
- There is at least one local taxpayer advocate (LTA) in each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico
- As the leader of the TAS organization, the National Taxpayer Advocate is required by law to deliver two reports to Congress each year.
- As part of the larger TAS organization, the Office of Systemic Advocacy addresses broad issues that impact groups of taxpayers, including both individuals and businesses.
