About the Taxpayer Advocate Service

Mission statement: As an independent organization within the IRS, we help taxpayers resolve problems with the IRS and recommend changes that will prevent the problems.   

  • There is at least one local taxpayer advocate (LTA) in each state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico  
  • As the leader of the TAS organization, the National Taxpayer Advocate is required by law to deliver two reports to Congress each year.   
  • As part of the larger TAS organization, the Office of Systemic Advocacy addresses broad issues that impact groups of taxpayers, including both individuals and businesses.  
  • This electronic press kit is a comprehensive source of information about TAS for the media.  It includes a list of IRS media relations representatives.
