Low Income Taxpayer Clinics
Low Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs) are qualifying organizations that provide free or low-cost representation for low-income taxpayers involved in tax disputes with the IRS, or are qualifying organizations that provide English-as-a-second-language taxpayers with education on rights and responsibilities.
LITCs are operated and managed by non-profit organizations, law schools or business schools. Each clinic independently determines if prospective clients meet the income poverty guidelines and other criteria before it agrees to represent a client.
Qualified organizations can use LITCs to provide opportunities for their students, staff and volunteers to acquire practical experience and serve the community. Academic institutions and non-profit organizations can apply for up to $100,000 in matching funds.
More information is available on the LITC pages on www.irs.gov/advocate or in IRS Publication 4134, Low Income Taxpayer Clinic List.
